മറക്കാനാവാത്ത ഹൈദ്രാബാദ് ദിനങൾ
Our reunion in Kumarakom was unforgettable. Those happy days are still fresh in our minds. It happened in January last year. Thomas George and Georgekutty Achayan were behind the festival that day. Many of our batch mates attended it individually and with their families. At that meeting, we decided to meet in Hyderabad next year. At the convention held in Kumarakom, S.L. Kumar, Salim, Seshagiri Rao, Ramakrishna Tummala and Udayabhaskar from Hyderabad, attended with their families. They were the ones who proposed the idea of holding the meeting in Hyderabad next year. It was accepted by everyone with great applause. We knew that the Hyderabad conference would be a huge success. Especially when great leaders like S.L. Kumar are at the helm.
Anyway, it seems that Joseph Augustine was the one who inquired about this after six months. Immediately, SL Kumar and his team started making this gathering a reality. The first thing they did was to start a WhatsApp group for this. Along with this, it was decided to hold the meeting in Hyderabad on January 26, 27 and 28. I was doubtful whether I would be able to attend this gathering. Because I had to attend the birthday celebrations of my daughter's children in Australia. The birthdays were on December 30 and January 15. I was worried whether I would be able to return to India and reach Hyderabad. I immediately called SL ji and presented my problem. SL reluctantly gave me permission. He also requested me to try my best to attend this love gathering.
Luckily, I was able to plan a return trip on January 20th as I had mentioned about this gathering to my daughter, who had booked the ticket. She booked the ticket accordingly. Anyway, I consider it an unforgettable blessing in my life to be able to attend this gathering of love.
Meanwhile, S.L. Kumar was in his natural style, informing us of everyone's travel information through the WhatsApp group in a timely manner. S.L.'s style is something else. I have never seen someone who writes the language of the computer so humorously . The WhatsApp messages, accompanied by smileys filled with humor, gave us all the pleasure of reading beautiful short stories.
That's when I noticed that the group from Kozhikode was going by train. It was Rajasekharan Pillai who informed me about this. He had booked tickets on the Sabari Express and informed me. Moreover, I informed him that my wife was not coming this time. She must have felt uncomfortable going to Hyderabad immediately after reaching Thrissur from Sydney. Anyway, I felt that her excuse was reasonable. I immediately booked my tickets on the Sabari Express. I was sure that the train journey with my friends would be fun.
TO HYDERABAD
On January 24, at 12.20 pm, the Sabari Express reached Thrissur on time. My classmates from Kozhikode who were also coming in sabari express boarded from Palakkad. Abdullah, Abdul Latheef, Abubakar, Skaria, Rameshan (Kappada), and Rajasekharan Pillai were the ones who joined me at palakkad on the train. Skaria and Kappada had come with their families to participate in this program. We were all in the adjacent compartments. The train journey was very memoreble. We enjoyed the train journey by sharing all the old REC stories. Politics, religionetc became part of our conversations. Everyone went to bed by 9 pm . When I woke up the next day, I found out that the train was running three hours late. I heard other passengers say that this was a common occurrence in indian railways. We reached Secunderabad Railway Station at 3 pm on 25/1/24. Secunderabad Railway Station is still in a very deplorable condition. Same building, same facilities as 50 years ago, despite India growing so much, this most important railway station in Telangana is still not undergoing any development.
We took a taxi and headed straight to the Daspella Hotel.
When we arrived at Das Pella Hotel .Georgekutty, author, pillai, karmachandran, aboobacker scaria
Karmachandran and his wife Shyamala on one side , and Georgekutty and his wife Elsa on the other .
SL had informed us earlier all our rooms were booked at Daspella hotel. I got Antoo P.D from Bombay as my roommate in my double room. Antoo and I have been friends since our pre degree classes. We both studied pre degree course at Christ College, Irinjalakuda. After that, we were together in the Civil Engineering batch at REC. Antoo is a permanent resident in Bombay. Since I came from Bombay early and the room was already booked, I had nothing to do but give my identity card. By then, many people had arrived. Tom Joseph and Moideenkutty Matari had come from Kozhikode together. . Tom Joseph came with his daughter's child. It is quite commendable that Tom Joseph came to this love gathering despite minor health problems. I was not surprised as Tom had informed me in advance that his wife had cancelled her ticket due to unavoidable reasons. Moideenkutty Matari is a native of Michigan USA.
History of REC
REC Kozhikode came into existence in 1961. Initially started in Kozhikode city, the college was shifted two years later to a place called Kattangal near Chathamangalam on the Kozhikode-Mukkam road, 22 km northeast of Kozhikode city. Today, this institute, known as the National Institute of Technology, is one of the best educational institutions in India. Today, NIT is a college with a department of Nanotechnology. It is also a deemed university.
Established in 1961, the Regional Engineering College was affiliated with the University of Kerala for the first two years. Later, in 1963, when the University of Kozhikode was established, it joined it.
The first principal was Professor M. V. Krishna Rao. The college, which started functioning in 1963 at Westhill Polytechnic, was shifted to its present campus in Chathamangalam, spread over 300 acres. During the time we were studying, there were only three branches , Civil, Mechanical and Electrical. Apart from this, a course called Preparatory Engineering was also available at that time. In 2002, the Government of India granted NIT status to REC. With the passage of the NIT Act of 2007, the Regional Engineering College became one of the premium engineering colleges in the country.
Today, NITC is the only fully residential engineering college in Kerala. 13 hostels have been built for this purpose. It is worth mentioning that the best internet connection is provided in all the hostels. Separate mess facilities are available in each hostel.
Today, NIT has 11 departments, 8 center departments, and 3 schools. These schools are the school of bio technology, school of management, and school of material science.
Ragam Cultural Festival is one of the cultural festivals held here. Ragam Cultural Festival was started to commemorate our brave artist P. Rajan who was mercilessly killed during the Emergency. Today it has become a cultural festival known in all the campuses of India. Many universities and colleges from within and outside Kerala participate in this on a competitive basis. The best musicians and actors also participate in it.
I joined REC in 1972. I remember my father also accompanying me that day which i had narrated in my earlier blog .We stayed at the famous Imperial Lodge in Kozhikode.Imperial Hotel was a famous lodge in Kozhikode at that time.During our studies, the college bus used to go to town every Saturday. The bus would start exactly at 2 pm near A Hostel. We used to go to calicut city to watch matinee movies. The bus ride was completely free. We would watch movies at Crown Theatre and return home after having delicious ghee roast athotel Maharani. Watching Qurbani and Yaadom Ki Baraat is still fresh in my mind. .
My first year roommates were Koshy Thomas from Thiruvalla and Ravi Varghese from Mavelikkara. Koshy's brother Cherian Thomas was studying in his final year at that time. It was a time when ragging was rampant. Freshers were accommodated in A hostel to be protected from ragging. Almost all of them were either from other states or from other districts, so there were very few day scholars. 50% of the students were from other states and a other 50% were from Kerala. Usually, after two months, second year students take the initiative to stop ragging. For some reason, not only did that not happen, but the ragging continued even after months passed. This caused us a lot of mental distress. Not only that, we even dared to file a complaint against the seniors for ragging. Until a few students were expelled from the college. One of them was Philip thomas, a second-year student from Thiruvalla. It was during this period that the movie Chembarathi was released. A new actor named Sudheer played the lead role in Chembarathi. Many complaints were made in the name of Chembarathi Sudheer. Philip was just killing time without doing any serious ragging. Suffice it to say that it became a source of embarrassment for him. All these were some of the incidents that happened in the first year.
There was also a small hospital with eight or ten beds in REC back then. I don't know if some heroes faked illness to save themselves from ragging or if they influenced Dr. Thomas, but I remember being admitted to the hospital.
In the first year, everyone was in the same class. The subjects that were to be studied in the first year were Humanities, Engineering Chemistry, Engineering Physics, Engineering Mathematics, Applied Mechanics, Geometric Drawing, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. The studies were organized in semesters. It was for everyone to study in general in first year. In the second year,we were allacated to our respective Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical branches .
I don't think any student can forget the teachers of the Humanities Department, namely Jussey Sir, Sankaran Nair, and Meenakshikuttyetc. Jussey Sir, who was of Jewish origin, got the opportunity to go to Israel, but he settled in Kochi permanently because of his love for India. Lonappan Sir, who was the head of the Physics department, was our chief warden. I remember that we were given all the freedom in the hostel. There are also stories of some individuals who gave in to various influences and ruined their lives. But that is only a small percentage. Most of the students of those days have served the country well and are retired today. We are gathering in Hyderabad to reminisce about old memories. I remember John in the Chemistry Department and Unni, who was called Water Unni as well. The head of the Mathematics Department was Kunjipalu. Dr. Ramakrishnan, Sulaiman and Annamma Mani were prominent figures in the Mathematics Department.
At the Daspella Hotel
Mr.Premnath Balakrishnan had come from New York with his wife. Bobby had come to attend this conference. When I saw him again, my mind went back fifty years. Premnath, called Bobby, was a smart student and a rank holder, and was my closest friend.
Soundar Rajan and his wife Anita arrived in Hyderabadearlier .
These two are an indispensable couple at every event. Anitha is the daughter of Vasumash, who was the work superintendent in our college. Soundar Rajan, a native of Kanyakumari, fell in love with Anitha while he was studying. It ended in their marriage. We can also say that they are the love couples of our batch. Soundar, is today the president of a large company, Bharuch, Gujarat.
When Premnath and Forest Gopi met Raju. P. Thomas
Ashok Kumar, whom we call Metroman , and VJ Jose, a doctor among engineers .Jose, who retired as a Chief Mechanical Engineer in the Ports Department, lives in Vyttila, Ernakulam, with his gynecologist wife Lisamma, taking care of his grandchildren. Metroman Ashok first joined Keltron . After that, he worked as a consultant in all the metros of the country like Calcutta Metro, Delhi Metro, Chennai Metro, Lucknow Metro, Mumbai Metro. Today, Ashok is a leader in the metro railways of India. I remember going to his residence when he was in Lucknow Metro and staying there for 2 days. Ashok is a person who loves me very much. He is permanently residing in Wayanad with his wife, who is a dentist.
Sanjeev and his wife and Sreedharan and his wife at Nedumbassery Airport .
K.K. Manohar and his wife (Manohar, a Mechanical engineer) served in several companies abroad (in the Gulf countries). With his wife Vidya He lives in Vikhroli, Mumbai and continues to work as a project consultant.
Next day
Filmmaking technology
was a fascinating sight at Ramoji Film City, where we were shown the camera techniques that are integral parts of filmmaking. When I saw how a gang of money-grubbers is being followed, edited and recorded in the studio, I remembered that cinema is about deceiving people. Similarly, sound effects and other things are done through small-scale technology. We spent hours watching all this.
Some of the floats from the Republic Day celebrations
Johnny and his wife, the owners of the popular vehicles business empire. Permanently residing in Ernakulam, the leader of the next Ernakulam meet. Despite his busy business schedule, Johnny always finds time to meet and interact with his devotees .
This is Raju P. Thomas, the staff photographer for our programs.
The great SL KUMAR. SL was the one who has been behind this show. He was accompanied by Sheshu ,Raju, Saleem, Ramakrishna and Ajay etc.But it is true that without him this great meeting would not have happened. He was seen everywhere from the start of this meeting.going around meeting everybody. His wife Smt Bhavani was also an allrounder helping the ladies.
